Indian May Carry Bejing Olympics Torch

India could well have a dream run at the Beijing Olympics, a 29-year-old graduate from IIM-Calcutta is in with a chance to run with the Olympics torch in China.

Rajib Maitra, a 29-year-old senior consultant working with the IBM, is the only Indian to have been shortlisted in the final 18 candidates who can go on to carry the 2008 Olympic torch in Beijing. But that is only if his documentary is voted to the top three.

Rajib Maitra is practicing for what could be India’s dream run at the 2008 Olympics. A consultant with IBM, Rajib is the only Indian among 18 global contenders who are in the race to carry the Olympic torch in China in its last leg.

Besides India, the finalists are Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States.

Lenovo had organized an online Google search for participants for the Olympic torch relay and they had invited essays from around thee world based on the topic.

Speaking up for underprivileged children, Rajib’s vision of nurturing them to become future torchbearers of the nation struck an instant chord with the judges. A 30-second video clip showcasing his idea is available on the Lenovo webpage.

“It has a very simple message in the end which says how as individuals we can be responsible and take care of one such child and give a better future to those who are not so privileged,” said Rajib Maitra, Indian contender.
